What is Setmelanotide?
Setmelanotide is a melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) agonist that acts on human and rat melanocortin 4 receptors; the mechanism of MC4R activation by setmelanotide may be different from that of naturally occurring ligands and *generative* synthetic agonists; setmelanotide may act by antagonizing a naturally occurring neurotransmitter that inhibits MC4R activation
Setmelanotide Effects
Setmelanotide binds to and activates MC4 receptors in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and the lateral hypothalamic region, which are involved in appetite regulation, and this action is thought to underlie its appetite-suppressing effects.
In addition to decreasing appetite, Setmelanotide increases resting energy expenditure in obese animals and humans. Importantly, unlike some other MC4 receptor agonists, setmelanotide has not been found to increase heart rate or blood pressure.
